Wraparound Childcare & Holiday Clubs in Cardiff: A Parent's Guide (2026)

ChildcareHub Editorial22 April 20267 min read

If your child is 4–11 and in a Cardiff primary school, you've probably already worked out that the school day doesn't fit the working day. Wraparound childcare — breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and holiday camps — is how most Cardiff families cover the gap. Here's a plain-English guide to what's available, what it costs, and where to look.

What counts as wraparound?

Three things, usually bundled together:

  • Breakfast clubs — typically 7.45am–8.45am on-site at school or a nearby community venue. £3–£6 per morning.
  • After-school clubs — typically 3.15pm–6pm. £8–£14 per session. Many include a snack and homework time.
  • Holiday clubs / camps — full-day care during Easter, summer, October half-term and Christmas. £25–£45 per day in Cardiff, usually with early-drop and late-pick options.

The £289m English Wraparound Childcare Programme doesn't apply in Wales. Welsh primary schools run wraparound under the Welsh Government's separate funding settlement, which is why provision is more fragmented here than in England.

The funding caveat (important)

Welsh funded childcare — the Childcare Offer for Wales and Flying Startdoes not cover wraparound for school-age children. Funded hours in Wales stop at the point a child starts reception. If you're paying for a 7-year-old's after-school club, it's out of pocket. See our guide to Welsh funded hours for what those schemes do cover.

Welsh school holiday dates 2026 (Cardiff)

Cardiff follows the standard Welsh school calendar. Key 2026 holidays to plan around:

  • Easter: 30 March – 10 April 2026
  • May half-term: 25–29 May 2026
  • Summer: 20 July – 28 August 2026 (six weeks)
  • October half-term: 26–30 October 2026
  • Christmas: 21 December 2026 – 2 January 2027

The Welsh calendar diverges from the English by a week or two most years, which matters if you have family across the Severn.

What's available in Cardiff today

Our live Cardiff directory pulls together CIW-registered wraparound providers, named operators, and community-run clubs. Some highlights:

  • Activ Camps — multi-activity holiday camps at primary-school venues across Cardiff. Good breadth (sports, crafts, Lego, cooking).
  • Cardiff City FC Foundation — football-focused holiday camps for football-mad kids.
  • Glamorgan Cricket — summer-only cricket skills at Sophia Gardens.
  • Techniquest — science, tech and engineering workshops at the Cardiff Bay science centre.
  • Community and church-run clubs — the long tail. Often the cheapest and most local, but the hardest to find because they don't advertise centrally.

How to choose

Three practical tests:

  1. Can your child get there from school without you? Most after-school clubs run shuttles from their partner primary. Confirm which schools they collect from.
  2. Is it registered with CIW? CIW registration is required if the club cares for under-12s for more than 2 hours. Registered providers show a "CIW Registered" badge in our directory. Non-registration isn't necessarily a red flag (short-session clubs are exempt), but it's worth asking about safeguarding policy.
  3. What's the pickup deadline? A 5.45pm pickup versus a 6.15pm pickup changes everything about a commute. Read the small print.
